Hi folks! A couple of weeks ago I gave a sneak peek of some community testing we were putting together and today we’re ready to share it out:
We are looking for Glitch creators to test out some work we are doing to bring custom domains back, thanks to Fastly’s free custom domain + TLS offering!
We recently had to put the “Add custom domains” feature into hiatus and while we’re not quite ready to go live with a better, more stable experience, we want to test a few things out and need your help!
If you want access to our exclusive Community Testers group, let me know in this thread - you’ll get access to our private testing support threads and upcoming testing opportunities. If you already responded in sneak peek thread, you should already have access!
Just added you to the community testers group on here and you can go through that tutorial linked above at your own leisure. Thanks for joining the journey!
You can go through the tutorial but we created a separate private category for asking for help or giving feedback on this testing program, as well as for announcements for future testing programs we are planning to launch after the custom domain one!
@AndrewHanson welcome, and plenty of room so I just added you to the group!
By the way, for anyone who ends up on this thread and wants to join, welcome! I’ll be out of the office tomorrow and checking back in briefly on Friday so please express interest in being added to the group and go ahead with the tutorial - but if you don’t hear from me over the next day, that doesn’t mean the testing group is closed, it’s just that it may take a day for me to get back to you!
hi, it’s currently the weekend for us folks in america and although i’m sure jenn loves the community, she does work at glitch and isn’t required to be active on the weekends. i’m sure she’ll be back soon!
everyone above this message that have asked to be added to our community testers group has now been added - thank you for your patience while i was getting my home internet access all sorted. next i’ll be going through all the emails sent from testing, you should here from me by end of day today (monday)!
I am stuck on part three/verify domain ownership of the tutorial. I created my CNAME record with my DNS provider which is google domains, and its been hours and the page will not go green.
@jenn I did not get the free domain token to work, but its all good. This is where I am getting stuck. Please look for two posts, because I am a new user I can only post one screenshot per post.

screenshot of the CNAME record I created using the info under the verification column.
Safe to say that Glitch will not be bringing back custom domains.
This is something I could solve in a matter of hours as a developer with over 27 years of experience yet they still over a year later have not done. Simply put, it was bought out and is being milked until it dies, that simple!
A company the size of Fastly could create their own CA and issue certs or they could simply use Let’s Encrypt and limit how many domains you can issue certs for to say 1 per month for free accounts and 2 for paid plan. I believe the limit for Let’s Encrypt is 200 domains per month but I’m sure if a company the size of Fastly worked with Let’s Encrypt there could be a custom contract made there easily.
I add domains to a free hosting service (Odoo) who mind you doesn’t offer same service as Glitch and thus that isn’t an advertisement, they have ZERO issues with issuing certs when I add domains, because it isn’t a problem! They just have their reasons they aren’t doing it and are not telling us why. I’ve given up on Glitch and have started using App Engine 100% free by setting it to use F1 instance then going in and setting it to use max of 1 instance thus giving me free tier of 28 hours per day on a single instance that doesn’t spawn additional instances, bam 100% free 600 Mhz server with 384 MB of ram that I never have to pay for that I have 100% control over!
Your assertion about Glitch and our roadmap is false. We are bringing back domains just as we said we would. This work is still in progress, but has taken time as we’re working towards a holistic solution that can make things easier to run and support over time, while also integrating into more of Fastly’s offerings — precisely because we want a long, healthy future for Glitch.
Glitch is being invested in, and in fact we’re in the midst of one of the biggest larger sets of improvements in Glitch history, which is why the community is working together on things like an all-new version of the main site itself.
Fastly has created its own certificate authority, in addition to being fully supportive of Let’s Encrypt right from the start.
This is a friendly community where we all collaborate — which means not making up conspiracy theories and definitely not stating as fact completely contrived, incorrect assertions about the platform.
You’re new to this forum, so maybe take some time and observe how everyone else is carrying themselves here; that’s the mutual expectation that community members have of each other.
hi. i’ve explored far enough in to this that, even though i am just today starting my first legit app on Glitch, and I do not understand exactly what Fastly TLS + Glitch does over Glitch Pro, I would go through the steps as listed and provide feedback for each of them. So may I please and may I please have the 2 domains to do it?
Also I initially ended up in the post on how to do it instead of this post here. And I saw how the last few posts were someone talking about getting their free domain token and the other person probing to see if they would get one too and being declined. That was sort of offputting until I searched around and found this prior post which contains the free domains (if it is as i think). I think, just to maintain the positive atmosphere, in that thread they should be lead here or hinted toward it or something so they aren’t just down in the dumps being the one person who gets no free domain. I will tell them myself except I am not sure yet if my understanding of the situation is correct!
If I understand correctly, I would love to help test if it is at no cost to me
Yes, correct - thanks for flagging that. I updated the URL and later today I’ll have a new post explaining the change, but I just wanted to swap those out in the old posts for folks who get to it today!
