Glitch for VS Code Extension - Sunset + Feedback

Hi all!

We’re making some very exciting changes to the Glitch editor, but we anticipate that this work may lead to breaking the Glitch for VS Code extension. To get ahead of that, we are going to be phasing out the extension by the end of this year.

If you’ve been using our Glitch for VS Code extension, we’d greatly appreciate your feedback in this survey, which also goes into more detail on what “phasing out” means here. If you can send your responses before October 31, we can make sure it’s considered as we move forward on this process.

I look forward to hearing your feedback, and thank you for being a part of the community!

The glitch for vs code extension is good for coding full-stack apps, faster

It’s sad that it’s going to be removed because of the new changes. I am happy to hear updates to the editor, though

Anyways, I feel that a good feature for the Glitch editor is auto-completion and better linting.

I also took a look at the survey and saw this typo:

Typo fixed, thanks for flagging that. You should post that feedback to the survey, I think it’s good!

So you will delete the vscode app?

Well, yes, the glitch engineers will delete it.

Submitted the form. Back when I used Glitch for my website (i still use it today, but more so for POCs and tests), I would always code with the extension. The extension is handy because I love the layout and feel of VS Code.

It would be my dream for the VS Code editor to be the web editor for Glitch

I vote for Cloud9!

I recently found out that the VS Code extension is great for staying on task and focusing on larger projects. I feel like it has improved my efficiency by a lot, because I was able to finish a project pretty fast while learning React a bit more. I’m also very picky about ide themes so I pefer using vscode in some cases for comfort.
Another thing I like about vscode is the use of icons which allows me to quickly find files in some cases. The sidebar also uses icons instead of words which I like

It would also be nice if glitch could have customisable keybinds becuase keybinds can help speed up coding.

and some good auto completion, since you are getting rid of the VScode extension.

Hey, which VSCode theme is that?

It’s called Horizon,

though I have to say thanks to @javaarchive for adding autosave

but all of it will be gone

when the extension gets removed.

I also submitted feedback to the form.

ok…

Basically what I was saying was that the vscode extension is going away, as defined by the topic name and description.

that’s what i thought

Would I still be allowed to setup a script that automatically sends changes back into glitch and triggers reload when file changes are detected, it’s pretty much the same with the glitch extension from that point on

I wanted to thank everyone who has submitted to the survey so far, and to remind folks that we’re accepting submissions until the end of the week!

@jenn I hope someone could keep the extension alive… somehow, so people can still enjoy it.

Now that the extension is being phased out, it would be a good idea to remove that editor tip that says “Try out Visual Studio Code extension!”.

I would recommend that glitch open sources the extension so the community can keep it alive.

I actually did use the Glitch for VScode extension. Pretty cool while it lasted.

Who knows really, its possible a workaround could be found.

Hi! So we’re not going to be open sourcing the extension for now, as it would require knowledge and use of the API that’s not currently available publicly, and we wouldn’t want to open source a project that we do not have the ability to properly support. We do hope to bring it back again in some capacity in the future, though!

Thanks for flagging that, I’ll have the team remove that!

Here’s a little bit of feedback, the purple-ish color in glitch’s dark theme actually makes me less efficient. The white dark theme makes it feel more clean and makes me more efficient.|
I feel like the color scheme for dark theme could be adjusted a bit, and it would be nice to be able to use themes from vscode, so I can use familiar syntax colors

I submitted the survey (even though the text above makes it sound like it’s closed) since I only learned of this today via the notice in VS Code. Since I ran two classes this year using the combo of VS Code + Glitch, I’m super grateful the sunsetting is scheduled to occur after my semester. :relieved:

the only reason I used glitch was cause of the extension, rip

Wait what? Why? I really need this!

Well you can always sync vscode to the git repo provided.

I only used glitch because of this extension. Without it, It’ll be hard to code things more smooth and faster for me. I even went ahead and bought boost membership to boost my projects. I really need that extension for me to easily complete my projects faster and on time. I mean don’t get me wrong, I love glitch for many reasons and I’ll still use it no matter what, but this extension was everything to me; hope it comes out again.

I’d still really like if the Glitch staff could open source the extension!

And I’m pretty sure a lot of people are also willing to work on it!

Just wanted to share that I also would love to see a vscode plugin come back for accessibility reasons. I rely on voice dictation for my programming, and having everything tightly integrated into vscode would be a huge help. Autocomplete and hinting really speeds up my work since I rely on speaking out loud to type and my vscode is pretty tailored towards my needs. I definitely get by with the glitch editor, but would really love something like this to come back.

Ah, that’s a real shame. Only just saw this after coming back to a project I’d last worked on in September. Being able to use a native application is pretty critical in terms of focus and productivity, especially for larger apps. Ensuring continued VS Code support is the sort of thing I would consider upgrading to a paid subscription for, but without that option, I’ll probably have to start looking for an alternative to Glitch sooner rather than later…

I would love for the extension to come back, as of right now it’s very difficult to work on my projects as Glitch doesn’t have the things that VS code has, including my installed extensions along with it, Glitch shouldn’t reinvent the wheel but rather focus on what they’re doing best.

Glitch editor is definitely useful thing to have around when I am not using my computer but when I have access to it I prefer to use VS code as it’s way more powerful and I am used to it, VS code gives me everything what I need and without that Glitch extension the process of keeping Glitch project up-to-date is not as convenient as it used to be.

Now I use GitHub to sync my project to Glitch but it’s not always a good solution when I am working on a small project that I might discontinue anyways which is gonna just clutter my GitHub projects page.

I didn’t know that this was happening until earlier this week, when I tried to use it on my personal laptop instead of my work PC. (The extension is still working fine on this PC, but my laptop won’t authenticate etc.) Having seamless integration with VS Code is pretty much essential from my point of view, and was one of the reasons I’d gone pro - I’m going to have to reconsider the situation.
