Would be possible to add support for Node 18 (the current LTS version until October 2023)? I’d like to use some of the newer features like built-in fetch
instead of having to install node-fetch
. I tried setting engines.node
to 18.x
but I get the error “Could not find node 18.x, using 10,” and it seems like 16.x is the highest supported version.
Hi @j-f! This is on our radar and in the works as part of larger updates we’re making to containers, we don’t have a timeline for it yet.
Are there any updates on this?
Active support for v16 ended 8 months ago and security support ends in about 2 months.
I wish Glitch used nvm
for Node.js version management. Then we can update it ourselves.
it’s not just that, you need a build of the later node.js version for glitch’s old glibc
I must do what it takes
Any news regarding support auf node 18 LTS?
Security Support for 16 LTS ends on 11th September 2023.
@jenn Any updates regarding Node v18 support? I’m quite limited what I can build on Glitch. Many libraries are starting to fail due to them dropping support for v16 and handy built in methods like fetch are not supported in older versions of node. And as @LiezarZ mentioned earlier, security support for v16 is ending very soon now.
How can it possibly be OK that Glitch is part of fastlify and Node v18 is not supported while v16 is beyond its support range?
They’re working on it. https://support.glitch.com/t/we-need-your-help-with-updating-node/
Hey everyone,
I was wondering if and when there will be new node.js versions. I am currently trying to run a project but I need node.js v18 - v18.17. Well and the latest version is still 16.14.2.
With that being said, when, if they do, will the next node versions be released to Glitch. I really like Glitch and I’d love to continue using it.
That’s it.
Can’t lie but I am rather concerned at the pace these changes are being made, or planned to be made, especially with such critical matters like node.js updates which I can confidently say make up a significant amount of total projects on the platform, and so keeping it up to date would be a big priority, not just from a compatibility standpoint but also from a security standpoint.
It seems they have their priorities fixated on other matters, but the question is what matters? I have a feeling we might be starting to see the end of glitch altogether, but I would like to be proven otherwise.
Will come before April 2024.

Hi @SpeedyCraftah - if the proof you need is Node to be updated, the blog post @LiezarZ mentioned is what we have to offer! I understand the wait is frustrating, but it’s simply because we have some technical debt to clear out and updates to be made to get our containers in a state to be able to handle more reliable and consistent updates to software we support on them (like Node).
I don’t ever make promises on things I can’t completely control, so I can’t tell you a specific date within the first quarter of the year, but I can promise you most of our small (but mighty) team is working on this - because that’s just a fact.
If you’re interested in testing out some other stuff we’re working on that’s not yet ready for primetime, let me know and I can add you to our community testers group!
I see! I wasn’t aware of this blog post and I thought everything was more of a “we’ll do it but we won’t”, but it does seem everything is getting a giant revamp which I’m really happy to see.
I was most concerned since having the most up to date version of something like node for a platform like glitch is pretty important since it holds people back, but I do understand that sometimes the easiest way out of technical debt is to focus on revamping everything instead of supporting it, which can explain the delay for the updates.
Of course, you can’t predict the future.
Sure - I’d be happy to help out and see what the progress is so far!
Appreciate ya! And just added you to the group so you should see a new pinned post about the latest test.
Any updates on this the first quarter of 2024 will end in a month?
Hi @deax - I regrouped with the team today to see if we’re still on track for this work. Our engineers had to take a detour for a few weeks to handle a few incidents over the last month which definitely is going to cause some delay for the container update work - we just don’t have enough info to say for sure. We’ll have a better idea of how off course we’re at in about 2 weeks. As soon as I know, I’ll post an update here.
It’s been about 2 months, are there any updates regarding the container update work?
We’ve been posting updates in the Building Glitch section like this one - but you’re right, we’re due for another update and so I’m putting one together for this week, coming soon!
I am still unable to upgrade Node.js. What might be causing the issue?
There hasn’t been any information for a while, when will we be able to use v18?
Seems that the highest Node version available in Glitch is “v16.14.2”
Can Glitch upgrade it at least up to v18.x?
Or can I do it myself in my env?
Any update on this topic?
When v18 will be available?
Not yet, Glitch said this on a similar post:
Yes, but it was posted in Jan 2023 - almost a year ago!
It would be nice to get any updated from Glitch
At least to get some time indication.
It’s December 2024, so almost two years I think
This is the staff’s most recent update on Node versions, posted last month: Node versions on Glitch
